DHI Hair Transplant: Process, Benefits and Who It Suits

DHI stands for Direct Hair Implantation. The term is often used as though it were an alternative to FUE. It is not, and that misunderstanding creates false expectations.

What DHI actually means

Every hair transplant has two steps: extracting follicles from the donor area and implanting them in the recipient area. FUE describes the extraction. DHI describes the implantation.

In the classic approach, channels are opened first and grafts are placed afterwards. With DHI an implanter pen, often called a Choi implanter, does both in one motion.

Where DHI helps

• Hairline: The angle and direction of each graft can be controlled more precisely, which matters most in the front row.
• Less time outside the body: Grafts spend less time exposed to air.
• Density on small areas: Grafts can be placed closer together on limited zones.
• Partial shaving: For patients who do not want a full shave, DHI is often more practical.

Where DHI changes nothing

On large areas with high graft counts, DHI takes longer and costs more without the result being necessarily better. If the donor area is weak, the implantation method does not change that. And a badly planned hairline stays badly planned whatever instrument placed it.

How the method gets chosen
